Characterized by their distinctive black and white stripes, zebras are one of the most easily recognizable animals. Their stripes come in different patterns, unique to each individual zebra. Although members of the horse family, zebras have never been truly domesticated. Zebras often panic and bolt in stressful situations making them unpredictable. Zebras are very social animals and live in large groups called harems. This closely connected social structure is symbolic, it implies reliance on community. Most believe that the stripes evolved as some sort of camouflage that served to hide the individual within the herd, when zebras cluster together the individual zebra has a fair chance of evading lions (their main predator) as the lions often lose site of their prey in the maze of moving stripes. Thus their striped camouflage is effective but only in the context of the herd. Zebras are a popular subject in art and zebra stripes is a popular style for furniture, carpets, and fashion. In addition, they have been featured in movies (Zebra in the Kitchen), cartoons (Madagascar), corporate symbols (Zebra pens and Technology), and Coats of Arms (Botswana). One of the most interesting features of this drawing is that it is the only one that does not contain any Dark Designs. It is just black stripes on a white background - truly out of character. However, in my defense, the reason why is quite simple. A good friend of my wife wanted a drawing for her babies room but she did not want anything "scary" in the drawing so to keep the peace at home, I drew the Zebra. And this is why it does not contain any Dark Designs hidden within the drawing. I like the drawing, I think it is really cool, it's just not me.
