Ancient Egyptian pharaohs were considered to be both divine deities and mortal rulers. During a three thousand year time span about 170 rulers reigned over ancient Egypt. As divine beings, the only person a god could marry was another god ie. a family member, if the bloodline was to remain pure. So rulers married their sisters, cousins, daughters and even their grand daughters! Perhaps the most well known of the pharaohs was Tutankhamen. He was a relatively minor pharaoh, however, his was the only tomb discovered untouched by grave robbers. King Tut's funerary mask is one of the most famous images of ancient Egypt and as such, is the dominating feature of this drawing. The mask is centered under the outline of the Great Pyramid. The Great Pyramid was built for Kufu, called Cheops by the Greeks, as his final resting place, however, it was robbed, only an empty sarcophagus was found. Although he was far less known, the father of Tutankhamen is probably the most interesting pharaoh to rule ancient Egypt. When he ascended to power, his name was Amenhotep (Amun is Pleased) but within a few years he changed his name to Akhenaton (Benevolent one for Aton). Akhenaton would marry Nefertiti (shown on the upper right of the drawing) and with her support he started a religious and artistic revolution. Akhenaton elevated Aton, the Sun Disk, to the center of Egypt's religious life. Then some years later, he elevated Aton to the only god, in effect making Egypt the world's first monotheistic religion. Temples of the other gods were closed and their priesthoods disbanded. In addition, Akhenaton unleashed a revolution in art. During his reign people were drawn with cone shaped heads and thin spindly limbs. (he is drawn in the lower left side of our drawing giving praise to Aton) This radical departure in art particularly the distorted body parts has left Egyptologists mystified while fueling the ancient alien theorists. After his death, the pharaoh's religious reforms and artistic changes quickly collapsed. His successors denounced him as the "Heretic King" and they erased his name from the List of Kings and returned the old gods and their priesthoods to power.
