The Hummingbird is a sacred animal in Aztec theology. The Mexica left their homeland in Aztlan (hence the name Aztecs) and - guided by their god Huitzilopotchli, searched for their promised land. Huitzilopotchli is often depicted as a hummingbird and his name means Lest Handed Hummingbird. It was said that the promised land would be revealed by a sign - the vision of an eagle perched on a cactus - in modern versions the eagle is devouring a snake - in the original Aztec accounts the snake is not mentioned. On an island in the middle of lake Texcoco the Aztecs saw an eagle seated on a cactus and the prophecy was fulfilled. They would then build their capital city of Tenochtitlan, which today is the center of Mexico City. The Aztecs would then go on from this humble beginning to dominate the Central Valley of Mexico. In honor of Huitzilopotchli, the Mexica wore hummingbird talismans (an amulet worn to gain power and or protection), the talismans being either representations or real hummingbirds, It is interesting to note that the Spanish Conquestadors would build their capital city on the ruins of Tenochtitlan and name their nation Mexico in honor of the fallen Mexica (Aztecs). The hummingbird is an exciting and popular bird that has a rich history and I hope you like my interpretation which includes several hidden Dark Designs.
