The unicorn is a legendary animal from European folklore that resembles a slender white horse with a large pointed spiraling horn projecting from it's forehead. Early descriptions depicted the unicorn with a billy goat's beard, cloven hoofs and a lion's tail. First mentioned by the ancient Greeks, it became the most important imaginary animal of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The unicorn was commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity, grace, and strength. A creature so elusive that it could only be captured by a virgin. Too fast and smart to be captured by man, the unicorn was considered to be wild and untamable, except by a maiden sitting alone under a tree in the woods. The unicorn, attracted by her purity, would lay his head in her lap and she would rock him to sleep. Once asleep, she would then cut off his horn and leave him to the hunters! It was believed, that it's horn had the power to neutralize poison and to heal sickness. Powdered unicorn horn, called Alicorn, was believed to hold magical properties and was sold in Europe for medicinal purposes as late as 1741. Mentioned by the Greeks, Assyrians, Indians, Japanese and Chinese, as well as numerous references in the Bible, the unicorn is one of the few mythological creatures considered to be beneficial in almost all cultures and continues to be a magical, mythical creature of wonder. My interpretation of the unicorn was done in reverse, meaning, the unicorn itself is pure white devoid of any detail and then I put all of the detail and the Dark Designs in the background. At first glance, one sees a unicorn rearing at the full moon, however, with a deeper look a whole new drawing appears. Besides the numerous hidden animals (seventeen in all) the drawing is rich in symbolism, everything from the symbolic struggle of Good versus Evil to the Egyptian pyramid and Ankh, the symbol of life.
