Originally from Waterford, Michigan - I attended both Michigan State and Oakland Universities. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Social Science, a Teaching degree in Social Studies and a Masters degree in Latin American History. During my studies, I developed an appreciation for Art History, and a special interest in the artistic styles of M.C. Escher, the Indians of the North West Coast, and the Native Americans of Meso-America (Aztecs and Maya) - all of which have influenced my own drawing style.
I began "drawing" in the university lecture halls - sketching along the margins of my note books. These "drawings" continued during the weekly staff meetings throughout the 36 years of my teaching career. Over the years, these sketches gradually evolved from free flowing designs that may or may not have had a final recognizable form to highly detailed, recognizable illustrations. These later drawings are still free flowing, however. they now have an overriding theme.
Friends have suggested the addition of color, however, i have resisted. I have always preferred the stark contrast of black ink on white paper. I feel that Pen and Ink drawings in black and white is the perfect medium for my artistic designs.
I have always admired great works of art and talented artists. To be honest, I have never really viewed myself or my drawings as such, in fact, for years I created these drawings merely for my personal amusement. To be sure, my drawings are detailed - labor intensive and interesting to look at, but for me, they remain fun exercises filling space and time.
My drawings begin with a theme or subject and then, within the framework of this theme, a multitude of other designs are incorporated, and blended together into a highly detailed design. I have called my drawings "Doodles on Steroids" and hide numerous animals within the body of the image - these hidden animals are my "Dark Designs" - designs hidden in the dark - also true is that I tend to be inspired by subjects of a darker nature. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as i enjoyed drawing them.
