The Lion has been an icon for humanity for thousands of years. Lions have been portrayed as strong and noble. Commonly called the "King of the Jungle" or "King of Beasts" - it is a popular symbol of royalty and stateliness. Highly distinctive, the male lion is easily recognized by it's mane, and it's face. Depictions have existed as far back as the Upper Paleolithic period in carvings and cave paintings. In virtually all ancient and medieval cultures. Lions are depicted in sculptures. in paintings and on national flags. Notable examples include the Lions Gate in ancient Greece and King Richard the Lionheart of crusader fame. In modern times the Lion continues to be an important symbol. The Lion is associated with clubs, associations, and sporting teams. In addition, Lions have been prominent in modern literature and the movie industry. The notable examples are the movies "Born Free" and "The Lion King". I drew this particular Lion for a woman from South Africa who wanted a drawing that represented her clan totems of the Lion and the Eagle, however, as is my style, I also included numerous other Dark Designs (twelve in all) within the body of the Lion. She seemed to like it and I hope you do as well, for more interesting creations, check our all of my drawings in the gallery on my web site.
