The earliest representation of a horse comes from Paleolithic cave paintings found in southern France. Throughout history there has been a close bond between the horse and humans. Serving in war, transportation, productivity, and agriculture, the horse is by far one of the largest contributors to the development of civilization. According to Greek mythology, the horse was created by Poseidon and is devoted to Hades (god of the Underworld) and to Ares (god of War). The Romans  believed the horse to be a symbol of the continuity of life and would sacrifice a horse to the god Mars every October, keeping it's tail through the winter as a sign of fertility and rebirth. Native Americans believed that the horse represented wild freedom, yet it entered into a silent contract with humans acknowledging mutual respect and awareness of responsibility to each other. In general, the horse is symbolic of power, grace, beauty, nobility, strength, and freedom. This particular horse is black as a result of my intricate patterns - the Black Stallion has been a popular theme in both books and in film - the movies "Black Stallion" and Black Beauty" are just two of the more notable examples. The Black Stallion is filled with designs - ten in all - and is one of my newer drawings but is quickly becoming one of my more popular drawings.
