The word fairy comes from the old French word faerie. Today when we think of fairies, we often visualize them as tiny, supernatural beings with wings and glowing. In addition, they are also believed to possess some sort of strange magical powers, like Tinkerbell in the story of Peter Pan or the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella. Fairies have been described as human in appearance. Wings, while common on Victorian fairies, are rare in the early folklore, however, today, fairies are often depicted with butterfly wings, Some fairies though normally quite small, were able to dilate (transform) their bodies to human size to imitate and interact with humans. Fairies are supernatural beings that can be best described by the Greek work daimon, which means "spirit". They are not divinity, ie. god or goddess, in the usual sense of the word, and yet they are not mere mortal, it is easier to classify them as minor divinity. In Christian mythology, fairies were a class of demoted angels. One popular story described how when the angels revolted, God ordered the gates of heaven shut, those still in heaven remained angels, those in hell became demons, and those caught in between became fairies. At one time it was a common belief that fairy folklore evolved from folk memories of a prehistoric race. It was suggested that the humans drove out the original inhabitants and the memories of this defeated hidden people developed into the fairy beliefs we have today. Perhaps the earliest form of fairies can be found in the mythical beings in Greek mythology, such as the nymphs. The nymphs were spirits or minor deities of nature or of other natural phenomena. Examples of fairies can also be found in the mythologies of the Romans and the Norse. Fairies also appeared in abundance in the Arthurian legends. King Arthur's half sister was called Morgan le Fey or Morgan the Fairy because she was believed to be a great sorceress and healer. Arthur's wife, Guinevere was believed to be a fairy and many knights were either born from fairies or took fairies as their lovers. My drawing is of a dreaming fairy and though it contains images of light, it is also composed of numerous Dark Designs.
