The Hippocampus is a mythological creature that is typically depicted as a horse in its forepart with coiling, scaly fish-like hindquarters. The name hippocampus comes from the Greek "hippos" which means horse and "kampos" which means sea monster. Poseidon, though god of the sea, is also god of earthquakes and horses, and the "horses" of Poseidon were the two hooved hippocampus'. In Greek and Roman imagery, Poseidon is often depicted driving a sea chariot drawn by hippocampus'. In ancient art, they were covered in green scales and had fish-fin manes and appendages. The ancients believed them to be the adult form of the sea horse. Hippocampus were also the mounts of the Nereide Nymphs. The Nereides were goddesses of the sea. They were patrons of sailors and fishermen, and they came to the aid of men in distress. The Nereides were depicted as beautiful young maidens, often riding on the backs of dolphins or hippocampus'. My interpretation of the hippocampus included twelve other Dark Designs hidden within the drawing as well as a beautiful Nereide. I hope you enjoy looking at my drawing of the hippocampus as much as I enjoyed drawing it.
