Pegasus is one of the best known mythological creatures. He is an immortal winged stallion usually depicted as pure white in color. Pegasus was a favorite subject of Greek artists. He was sired by Poseidon and the Gorgon Medusa. According to Greek mythology, when the Greek hero Perseus beheaded Medusa, Pegasus sprang from her neck. Perseus was the first to ride Pegasus. After he heard that Andromeda, the daughter of Cassiopeia, was about to be sacrificed to the sea monster the Cetus, he mounted Pegasus and flew to the coast where he found Andromeda chained to a rock. He then rescued Andromeda by displaying Medusa's head, which he had in a bag, turning the monster to stone. He then freed Andromeda and soon after they were married. With the help of Athena, Pegasus was captured by the Greek hero Bellerophon who then rode Pegasus to defeat the Chimera, a fire--breathing three headed monster. After this glorious victory, Bellerophon thought himself equal to the gods and urged Pegasus to fly him to Mt. Olympus. But Bellerophon's arrogance enraged the gods. So Zeus sent a gadfly to bite Pegasus causing him to rear back sending Bellerophon hurtling to the ground. Pegasus then continued on to Mt. Olympus where he spent his days carrying lightning bolts for Zeus. Eventually Zeus placed Pegasus amongst the stars as the constellations where his rising marked the arrival of the warmer weather of spring and the seasonal rainstorms which is why Pegasus is often called "Thunderbolt Bearer of Zeus". Even today, Pegasus is one of the most popular images from Greek mythology, appearing in everything from corporate logos to figures on carousels. Pegasus is another drawing in the Greek mythological theme and drawn in my typical style. I have hidden four other Dark Designs as well as my initials within the body of Pegasus. I could have included more Dark Designs but I opted to keep the feather pattern in the wings. The feathers of the wings were quite tedious but I like the way they turned out.
