The Griffin (Griffon, Gryphon) - is a legendary creature with the body and tail of a lion and the head, front legs and wings of an eagle and it's eagles head is usually depicted with ears. The Griffin was believed to be an especially powerful and majestic creature and was thought of as the king of the creatures. In ancient times the Griffin was both a symbol and guardian of divine power. While most commonly found in the art of ancient Greece, they were also found in the lore and art of ancient Persia and ancient Egypt as far back as 3,300 B.C. In medieval lore, the Griffin was seen as the union of a terrestrial beast and an aerial bird and was seen in Christendom to be a symbol for Jesus who was both human and divine, and as such it can be found sculpted on numerous medieval churches. In medieval times it was believed that the Griffin possessed healing powers as well as courage, boldness, intelligence and strength - and as such, they were depicted on the shields and banners as part of their coat of arms. The Griffin is a popular drawing and I hope you fine it interesting as well.
