Elephants have been represented in art since Paleolithic times. Africa in particular contains many rock paintings and engravings of the elephant. Cave paintings in southern France and Spain contain images of mammoths. In the far East, elephants are depicted in Hindu and Buddhist temples and shrines. Elephants are common subjects in religious beliefs, for example, the Mbuti Pigmy of the Congo rainforest believe that the souls of their dead ancestors reside in elephants. In Sumatra, elephants are associated with lightning. One of the most important Hindu deities, the Elephant-Headed god Ganesha, is believed to be able to give people success as well as grant them their desires. In Buddhism, it is said that one of the Buddha's incarnations was a White Elephant and in Islam, Muhammad was born in the year 570, the year of the Elephant. Depending on the culture, the elephant symbolizes strength, power, reliability, longevity, loyalty, and good luck - especially if the trunk is up. So, obviously, I have drawn my elephant with his trunk up, and hidden numerous Dark Designs with its body. The elephant has become one of my most popular drawings which led to the drawing of it's cousin - the mammoth. I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed drawing it.
