In mythology, the Eagle is the universal symbol of the gods of the sky. The Eagle is often depicted in combat with serpents or bulls, creatures who symbolize earthly desire (bulls) or evil (serpents). It is most often a solar symbol. though it is sometimes seen as thunder or lightning. The divine Eagle is often a hybrid or transformed man, often a king or hero of great virtue. The Eagle symbolizes strength, courage, farsightedness, and immortality. It is considered to be the king of the air and messenger of the gods In mythology, the Greeks associated the Eagle with Zeus. It was the Eagle named Aquila that retrieved the thunderbolts of Zeus and carried his messages and it is from his name we derive the English word "eagle". The Romans associated the Eagle with Jupiter, and the Norse with Odin and the Eagle has been a "heraldic" animal as well for many noble families. The Roman Republic was represented by the Eagle, and when Rome was divided into the Easter and Western empires, the Roman Eagle was depicted with two heads (one facing east and one facing west). In Islam, the Black Standard of Mohammad was called the "Banner of the Eagle" and in Christianity, the Eagle was the symbol of Saint John. Imperial Russia was represented by the Eagle, however, the Communists would change this to the Russian Bear. The Eagle symbolized power in Nazi Germany and freedom in the United States. The Aztec sun god Hiutzilopochtli took the form of an eagle in the well known prophecy of the settlement of Mexico. The Aztec Order of the Eagle were warriors who wore Eagle feathers and worshipped Quetzalcoatl. The Feathered Serpent - a god with the head of an eagle and the body of a snake - sort of a flying reptile that resembled a dragon. Following the Spanish defeat of the Aztecs, they would build their capital city, Mexico, named after the Mexica (original name of the Aztecs) on the ruins of the Aztec capital city Tenochtitlan and adopt the Eagle as their national symbol aa displayed on the flag of Mexico today. I drew this Eagle perched atop a mountain peak and filled it with numerous Dark Designs.
