In Greek mythology, the sirens were dangerous sea nymphs, who were describe as beautiful, enchanting and enticing. The sirens were the daughters of Phocys and Ceto. Phocys was god of the hidden dangers of the deep and was depicted as a fish-tailed merman. His consort was his sister Ceto, the primordial sea goddess, and their union produced terrible monsters like the Gorgons. Sirens are portrayed as femmes fatales who sat on the shore of their island and lured sailors with their seductive and compelling music and song. Anyone who heard their song became totally mesmerized and obsessed with reaching the shore where they would be killed and eaten by the sirens. The sirens that were written about the most were Pisinoe, Aglaope, and Theixepi. One of them played the lyre, one played the flute and the other one sang. According to Greek mythology, Demeter, goddess of harvest and fertility, turned the sirens into half women, half bird creatures after the three sisters failed to save Demeter's daughter Persephone, when she was kidnapped by Hades, who forced her to become his wife. Sirens were sometimes depicted as strange combinations of women and birds, sometimes as beautiful women whose bodies as well as their voices were irresistibly seductive and occasionally as creatures of the sea appearing somewhat as mermaids. Belief in sirens by early Christians was discouraged, however, in later Christianity, they were viewed more as a symbol or allegory for worldly temptations. Sirens were used as a symbol for the dangerous temptations embodied in women. In the Odyssey, Homer tells how Odysseus escapes from the sirens by filling his crew's ears with wax. Then, he had them tie him to the ships mast so he could hear the Siren's Song. Today, the phrase "Sirens Song" refers to any fatal temptation. In my interpretation of a siren, I have opted for the sweet innocent face and beautiful mermaid body, however, the razor sharp talons allude to a darker nature, approach at your own peril.
