The minotaur was a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man. He dwelt at the center of a labyrinth, an elaborate maze, built under the palace of King Minos. When Minos ascended to the throne, he prayed to the god Poseidon to bless him with his support and as a sign of that support to send him a snow white bull. In exchange for his support, Minos promised to sacrifice the bull in his honor. Poseidon did so but Minos did not fulfill his promise. The bull was so beautiful that Minos decided to keep it for himself and to sacrifice one of his other bulls instead. This angered Poseidon who then punished Minos by sending Aphrodite, goddess of Love to cast a spell over Minos' wife so that she fell deeply in love with the magical bull from the sea and the resulting offspring was the monstrous minotaur. This unnatural offspring of man and beast had no natural source of nourishment and thus devoured humans. Minos, in fear for his life, constructed a gigantic labyrinth to hold the minotaur. Then to appease him and to keep him there, the king sent seven girls and seven boys each year into the labytinth. Theseus, son of Aegeus, king of Athens, volunteered to slay the monster. Theseus and Ariadne, the eldest daughter of King Minos had fallen in love and she gave him a ball of thread which he used to trace his path in and out of the labyrinth. then using a sword given him by his father, he killed the minotaur and led the children back out of the labyrinth. He then abandoned Ariadne, sailing for home with her younger sister! His father, King Aegeus, hearing that his son had died at the hands of the minotaur, committed suicide by throwing himself over a cliff and into the sea that now bears his name. This act secured the throne for Thesrus and caused many to speculate as to how the misinformation came to be sent to King Aegeus. The minotaur has been represented in many ways, some are drawn with cloven hoofs and others with human feet, some with broad horns and other with short upright home and some even have tails. My version is a composite of these.
